Cheng Ran: The Last Generation

Represented by Leo Xu Projects in Beijing, Cheng Ran's often hypnotic multimedia oeuvre spanning installation, video, sound and performance, is notable for its sensitivity to the relationship between language and visual form, its use of shock effects, and its complex engagement with the history of Western media and literature.
Since attending China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Cheng Ran has exhibited at The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, the Seoul International Film Festival, Galerie Urs Meile, Beijing, and the Institute for Unstable Media in Rotterdam.
With The Last Generation, Cheng Ran has prepared a script suffused with the ambiguous mixture of nostalgia, revulsion and uncanny arrest that marks contemporary Manhattan's relationship to its seedy 1970's past: both viewed from afar and mediated through film. The work was originally created in reaction to In Event of Moon Disaster, 9BC's first theater event in July 2012.
The Last Generation was translated by Xu Qiao, a Beijing-based curator. It will be directed by Louisa Proske, a graduate of Yale Drama School.

The Last Generation is presented in conjunction with the multidisciplinary arts platform Wall/Ladder/Machine, and the Loisaida United Neighborhood Gardens (LUNGS) Harvest Festival, which features programming throughout the LES community gardens between October 5th and 7th.
